Daltons who died on the James

The following list are named all those who boarded the ill-fated emigrant ship the James at Custom House Quay Limerick destined for America.

In early 1834 before the James and the Astrea (who also was wrecked in 1834, a first hand report of that wreck from a survivor of the Astrea) left Limerick Port a government official was appointed to access the seaworthiness of both these ships. Lieutenant Lynch R.N. inspected both ships and after they both failed to reach their destination he was discharged from duty.

It was said of the James at the time “reported, to have been near half a century old. What a crazy hulk was appropriated for human freight and no wonder she was destined to be the coffin of so many”

Northern Ireland - Annals of Ulster Extractions
The Annals of Ulster (Irish: Annála Uladh) are annals of medieval Ireland. The entries span the years from AD 431 to AD 1540. The entries up to AD 1489 were compiled in the late 15th century by the scribe Ruaidhrí Ó Luinín, under his patron Cathal Óg Mac Maghnusa on the island of Belle Isle on Lough Erne in the province of Ulster. Later entries (up to AD 1540) were added by others.
Previous annals dating as far back as the 6th century were used as a source for the earlier entries, and later entries were based on recollection and oral history. T.M. Charles-Edwards has claimed that the main source for its records of the first millennium AD is a now lost Armagh continuation of the Chronicle of Ireland.
The Annals used the Irish language, with some entries in Latin. Because the Annals copied its sources verbatim, the annals are useful not just for historians, but also for linguists studying the evolution of the Irish
language.
A century later, the Annals of Ulster became an important source for the authors of the Annals of the Four Masters. It also informs the Irish text Cogad Gáedel re Gallaib.
The Library of Trinity College Dublin possesses the original manuscript;; the Bodleian Library in Oxford has a contemporary copy that fills some of
the gaps in the original. There are two main modern English
translations of the annals – Mac Airt and Mac Niocaill (1983) and MacCarthy (1893).

He was a man who granted no protection to cleric or laymen or to the poets of Ireland, for he plundered every one of its clerics any men of skill in every art on whom he laid hands and expose them to cold and beggary. He plundered Niall son of Aed O hUicinn in Usnagh of Meath, and Henry Dalton attacked the son of James Diuit and the King's followers and [took from them a cow for each cow and a horse for each horse and a sheep for each sheep and a pig for each pig [which Niall had lost] and gave them to the Ui hUicinn. They were then convoyed into Connacht. After this the Ui Uicinn made lampoons on John Stanley an~ he lived only five weeks till he died from the venom of th lampoons. Now this is one of two poet's miracles which were worked for Niall O hUicinn: the freezing to death of the Clanconway on the night after he was plundered in Clada, and the death of John Stanley from the venom of the lampoons.

1468.38 - A great raid by Tadc son of Calbach [O Conchobair Failgi] on Crevagh by the Inny, in which more than twenty men and nearly forty of their packhorses were taken from them. Dalton, who instigated the expedition, and Mag Eochacain were wounded but Tadc carried off the prey.
1472.12 - O Cellaig made a great attack on Moneylea. The Galls of Western Meath—Petits, Tyrrels, d'Arcys and Daltons—caught up with them and O Cellaig was defeated. Donnchad O Cellaig and many others were captured, and many of their footmen and mercenaries were killed.
1475.12 - O Domnaill made a circuit in Connacht and made peace between O Ruairc and O Raigillig. Thence he marched to Fenagh, where Mag Ragnaill met him and they both proceeded past Sliab Cairbre and through Mag Tethba and Moybrawne, and the Abbot of Lara was killed in their following by an arrowshot from Rathreagh. From here he passed westwards through Moybrawne and they rested and encamped that night at Cuircne of Meath, where the Dillons and the Daltons came in and made peace with him. Thence he went on to Offaly and Cairbre of Leinster, where O Conchobair [Failgi] came to meet him. On the other part came the Meath Galls, and the lands were destroyed in the fighting. Peace was afterwards made and O Domnaill returned home by way of Athlone.

"Journal of the Association of the Memorials of the Dead of Ireland" Vol. IV that indicates the obelisk-like monument, about thirty feet in height, may have been erected at the time the house was built. It was adorned with the profiles of Empress Maria Theresa and the Emperor Joseph II of Austria, George III plus the arms of the family. The note at the bottom of the drawing reads "Dalton Monument, Rathconrath, Oct 20, 1900" and signed W.E. In 1899, the Rev F. A. On the South Side:

On the West Side:

Annals of the Four Masters

Overview:
The Annals are mainly a compilation of earlier annals, although there is some original work. They were compiled between 1632 and 1636 at a Franciscan friary near the Drowes river now in County Leitrim, and on the border with County Donegal and County Sligo. The patron of the project was Fearghal Ó Gadhra, a Gaelic lord in Coolavin, County Sligo.
The entries for the twelfth century and before are sourced from medieval annals of the community.
The later entries come from the records of the Irish aristocracy (such as the Annals of Ulster, and the seventeenth-century entries are based on personal recollection and observation.
The chief compiler of the annals was Brother Mícheál Ó Cléirigh from Ballyshannon, who was assisted by, among others, Cú Choigcríche Ó Cléirigh, Fearfeasa Ó Maol Chonaire andPeregrine Ó Duibhgeannain. Although only one of the authors, Mícheál Ó Cléirigh, was a Franciscan friar, they became known as 'The Four Friars' or in the original Irish, Na Ceithre. The Anglicized version of this was "The Four Masters", the name that became associated with the annals themselves.
The annals are written in Irish. The several manuscript copies are held at Trinity College Dublin, the Royal Irish Academy,University College Dublin and the National Library of Ireland.
The first substantial English translation (starting at AD 1171) was published by Owen Connellan in 1846. The Connellan translation included the annals from the eleventh to the seventeenth centuries. The only version to have a four-colour frontispiece, it included a large folding map showing the location of families in Ireland. This edition, neglected for over 150 years, was republished in the early twenty-first century. The original translation was followed several years later by a full translation by the historian John O'Donovan. The translation was funded by a government grant of £1,000 obtained by the notable mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton while he was president of the Royal Irish Academy.
The Annals are one of the principal Irish-language sources for Irish history up to 1616. While many of the early chapters are essentially a list of names and dates, the later chapters, dealing with events of which the authors had first-hand accounts, are much more detailed.
